Skyros, the southernmost island of the Sporades, has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. It played a key role during the Mycenaean civilization and was mentioned by Homer as a place where Achilles was hidden before the Trojan War.
During classical antiquity, Skyros was under Athenian and later Macedonian rule. It experienced Roman and Byzantine influence and endured pirate attacks through the Middle Ages.
The island became part of modern Greece in the 19th century and continues to preserve its distinct cultural identity through its architecture, customs, and lively traditions.

The Skyrian Carnival is one of the most unique and traditional events in Greece. Rooted in ancient Dionysian rituals, it brings the island to life with music, masks, and folklore.
The most iconic figures of the carnival are the "Geros" (old man), dressed in goat skins and heavy bells, and the "Korela", his wife, who follow a ritualistic path through the village.
Lasting for several weeks, the festival combines theatrical elements, satire, dancing, and spontaneous performances that celebrate Skyros’ distinct cultural identity.
